Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer

The Photo above is a cross section of a human lung. The white area in the upper lobe is the cancer; the black areas are discoloration due to smoking....Yuk! I'm really glad I quit smoking...

Definition: Cancer that forms in tissues of the lung, usually in the cells lining air passages. The two main types are small cell and non-small cell. These types are diagnosed based on how the cells look under a microscope.

Also called: "Bronchogenic carcinoma"...

It's one of the most common cancers in the world. It is a leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the United States. Cigarette smoking is the cause most of the time. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk. High levels of pollution, radiation and asbestos exposure may also increase risk.

Common symptoms include:

  • A cough that doesn't go away and gets worse over time

  • Constant chest pain

  • Coughing up blood

  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or hoarseness

  • Repeated problems with pneumonia or bronchitis

  • Swelling of the neck and face

  • Loss of appetite or weight loss

  • Fatigue
